Alexis Smith in The Woman in White

In 1948, two of my favorite classic actresses, Eleanor Parker and Alexis Smith, shared the screen in The Woman in White. Both women are completely gorgeous in their own distinctive ways, both in peak form at the height of the first stage of their respective long careers. The pair had also appeared together previously in the 1946 film Of Human Bondage (The Woman in White was also made in 1946 but not released until 1948). Eleanor Parker plays a dual role in The Woman in White but this in no way detracts from Alexis Smith's part in the movie. In fact, it is a perfect contrast: Eleanor Parker goes over-the-top for both of her characterizations, whereas Alexis Smith gives a nicely understated performance as Marion Halcombe, innocent cousin of the much-maligned Laura Fairlie (Parker).
