Janet Leigh in The Doctor and the Girl

In 1949, Janet Leigh co-starred with Glenn Ford in The Doctor and the Girl, an entertaining examination of wealthy doctors. This film is not amongst the most popular in the careers of either Leigh or Ford, but nevertheless it is quite fun and great showcase for both actors.

In The Doctor and the Girl, Janet Leigh plays a young woman with a lung abscess. Glenn Ford plays an arrogant, cocky young doctor fresh out of Harvard. He knows how to technically be a doctor but knows nothing of compassion. Janet Leigh's character touches his heart, however, and the two fall in love and he eventually learns the meaning of caring for his patients no matter how much money they have. The film is also known for it's somewhat tactful handling of the home abortion issue (even though they don't come right out and say that is what is happening). Regardless, Janet Leigh is young, beautiful and absolutely charming here and her fans would be well served by seeing this movie.

Tuesday Weld on Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater

Tuesday Weld never saw fit to do many westerns during her long career and when she did, it was only on television, never in a feature film. Apart from her appearance on Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater, she only took part in one other project set in the Old West (a guest spot on the TV series Cimarron Strip).

In an episode of Zane Grey Theater titled 'The Mormons', we get a rare glimpse of Tuesday Weld in the 19th century. In this guest appearance, the beautiful young actress plays the beautiful young daughter of the leader of a group of Mormons. These poor Mormons are simply looking for a peaceful place to settle but have been endlessly persecuted. When they arrive near Joshua City, the people of that town decide to not let the Mormons cross the river under the pretense that these settlers are carrying cholera. A standoff ensues when the Mormons announce that they are carrying no disease.

Given a few brief scenes, it is a credit to the charm and appeal of Tuesday Weld that even in this format (a half hour western drama) she is able to make a great impact on the viewer.

Tuesday Weld on Ben Casey

Tuesday Weld was quite busy in 1962, appearing as a guest on at least 8 different television episodes throughout the year. One of these appearances was on the successful medical series Ben Casey. This Ben Casey episode, titled 'When You See an Evil Man', was directed by the famous Sydney Pollack.

At the beginning of the episode, Tuesday Weld gives a very restrained performance. True to form, by the end of the show, her tone and demeanor have changed completely. Sure, the outcome is predictable but this Ben Casey episode is quite fun and certainly worthwhile for Weld fans.

Meg Foster on Medical Center

In 1972, Meg Foster guest starred alongside Ida Lupino and Howard Duff in an episode of Medical Center called 'Conflict'. Nearly two years later, Meg Foster would appear on Medical Center again...but for now we'll just take a look at her first appearance on the show.

In 'Conflict', Meg Foster plays a young woman who has long suffered from a heart condition. Typical of Medical Center and other medical shows, certain guest stars are never seen out of their hospital beds and this is the case here. We only get to see a sickly Meg Foster, but she does a great job with her ailing character and overall she makes a very sympathetic patient.

Meg Foster on Police Story

In her final TV guest role of the decade, Meg Foster appeared in the two-hour 1977 season premiere of Police Story. The episode, titled 'Trigger Point', was later rebroadcast in two separate parts.

Meg Foster's time on-screen is relatively brief but, as always, she makes the most of the time she is given. She shares the bulk of her scenes with actor Don Johnson (Meg Foster would later guest star on his Miami Vice series), but also is seen in bed with actor Dennis Cole.

Jo Ann Harris in The Gay Deceivers

In 1969, Jo Ann Harris co-starred in The Gay Deceivers. The movie, about two straight guys who pretend to be gay in order to dodge the Vietnam draft, was a humorous, fairly liberal look at homosexuality in late 1960s California. Because it was 1969 and the filmmakers were making something for a wide audience, they couldn't really go too, too far with the material. However, they pretty much all but said that one of the two lead characters (who was supposed to be a narcissistic womanizing gigolo) was actually gay. Despite any subtext, The Gay Deceivers is a great movie, working both as a fun romp and a nice time capsule for the period.

Jo Ann Harris has a smaller role in The Gay Deceivers and she plays the sister of one of the lead characters. She has a couple key scenes and actually provides the only real female nudity in the film. The actress is quite appealing and certainly charming in her role.

In 1969, it really seemed like Jo Ann Harris was going places. Right around the time The Gay Deceivers was released was when the actress was starting to get nice featured roles in television and film projects. Though Jo Ann Harris had definite star quality and had a number of triumphs over the next decade, her career never progressed to that higher level of fame and recognition. With The Gay Deceivers, we get to see a young Jo Ann Harris, eager to conquer Hollywood and ready for bigger things.
