Kay Lenz in Sanctuary of Fear

In 1979, Kay Lenz was the featured guest star in Sanctuary of Fear, a pilot for a proposed television series based on the Father Brown character created by author G.K. Chesterton. The project was not altogether faithful to the original literary figure, and is instead an update of the character, transplanting him to present-day New York City and changing his nationality from British to American. Some fans of the literary character were displeased by this TV movie, though others have managed to take some enjoyment from it. Reviews in American newspapers at the time of the original broadcast of Sanctuary of Fear in the spring of 1979 ranged from lukewarm to positive. Most were in agreement that Barnard Hughes and Kay Lenz were both appealing in their roles, and that the production had some good elements, but the overall concept just wasn't that thrilling. Indeed, I too quite enjoyed watching Sanctuary of Fear but I had doubts that this would have made a good weekly series. That being said, as a standalone project Sanctuary of Fear is still quite fun, with two great leads and a good supporting cast, and is another fine thriller from director John Llewellyn Moxey.

Kay Lenz is very appealing in her role as aspiring actress Carol Bain in Sanctuary of Fear. She handles her part well and is quite beautiful throughout.

What did Pamela Sue Martin do in 1980?

Actress Pamela Sue Martin is primarily remembered for her television work, first as Nancy Drew on The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries from 1977-1978 and then as Fallon Carrington on Dynasty from 1981-1984. Between those two major TV roles, Pamela Sue Martin did some great work. Her first post-Nancy Drew project was a TV movie called Human Feelings in which she co-starred with Billy Crystal. 1979 saw Pamela Sue Martin take a shot at feature films (she hadn't appeared in a theatrical release since 1974), and a stab at changing her 'good girl' image, with the film The Lady in Red. Things were quiet for quite some time following those two movies, but then in December 1980, Pamela Sue Martin appeared in episodes of two sappy ABC series: Fantasy Island and The Love Boat.

Fantasy Island - "The Snow Bird" (originally broadcast December 6, 1980)

In Pamela sue Martin's Fantasy Island guest appearance, she plays a trapeze artist named Velda. A guy who works at the circus, Ned Pringle (played by future Fall Guy sidekick Douglas Barr), falls in love with her and uses the magic offered by Fantasy Island to win her attention by becoming a trapeze performer himself.

The Love Boat - "Boomerang" (originally broadcast December 13, 1980)

In Pamela Sue Martin's Love Boat guest appearance she plays a model named Donna Dayton who wears a fake wedding ring to distance herself from unwanted male attention. In this episode, she primarily acts opposite actor Barry Van Dyke.

Clip of Wendy Kilbourne in Condor

In 1986, Wendy Kiblourne co-starred with Ray Wise in a feature-length TV series pilot called Condor. This scene serves as the introduction of the not-quite-human Lisa Hampton (Wendy Kilbourne's character).

Kay Lenz: A career vs. a water bed

Here's a early press piece about actress Kay Lenz which was originally published in December, 1973. At this point, her career was just beginning to take off due to her starring roles in the feature film Breezy and the well-received TV movie Lisa, Bright and Dark. The odd title of this article refers to the fact that she used to date a waterbed salesman.

Lois Chiles newspaper coverage 1972-1978

The following is a collection of newspaper clippings about actress Lois Chiles spanning the first decade of her career. She first started getting press at the end of 1972 for her second movie, Robert Redford/Barbara Streisand project The Way We Were. Lois Chiles then garnered more publicity in 1974 for her supporting role in the film The Great Gatsby. The actress then took several years off in the mid-1970s but newspaper coverage of her activities resumed in 1977 when she began filming Death on the Nile. In 1978, Lois Chiles began working on her biggest movie, and perhaps best remembered role of her career, the James Bond classic Moonraker. Of course, her new-found status as a Bond girl brought her even more press attention.
